Nazaré
A fishermen’s village with a wide beach and high cliffs which has always been able to maintain most of it’s traditional outlook and is therefore still a very popular place for many people, Foreign and Portuguese to spend their holiday.
You can still see fishermen in checked shirts, black hats and their women with their many layered skirts fixing the nets and laying out the fish in frames to dry. Still they use the many colored fishing boats which used to be moved by using oxen.
Legend tells that the name Nazaré was given when in the 14th century, a monk brought from Nazareth with him a statue of the Mother Mary.
